In Like A Lion, Out Like A Lamb

{jathumbnail off}
A high flying start followed by a turbulent finish. The Winnipeg Jets strong start to March found them in first place of the Southeast Division. However, the tail end of March proved to be a different story as they closed off the month with a 2-4 record and will now try to fend off the Carolina Hurricanes and Washington Capitals for the division title.

Capital Gains

Coming of a win against the Boston Bruins, the Jets looked to continue their winning ways as they hosted the Washington Capitals in back to back home games. However, Capitals goalie Braden Holtby had other plans. Holtby had previously shutout the Jets 3-0 on March 2 and picked up where he left off stopping the 20 shots he faced en route to a 4-0 win. Riding a hot goalie, the Capitals grounded the Jets the following night 6-1 led by Alexander Ovechkin’s two goal performance.

Back on Track

The Jets would get back in the win column as they took on two Southeast division foes. The Jets used a three point night from forward Bryan Little to beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2. Ondrej Pavelec was brilliant stopping 23 saves and coach Claude Noel was quick to praise his netminder.

“[Pavelec] has been arguably our best player pretty much for a long stretch of time. I’m just thankful that he’s in the net, let’s put it that way,” Noel said. “I thought he did his part and more and that’s what he has been doing.”

In a key division battle, the Jets downgraded the Hurricanes with a 4-1 win. Evander Kane provided the firepower registering a goal and three assists. The win gave the Jets some breathing room in the division race over the Hurricanes.

A Southeast Storm Coming

The Winnipeg Jets found themselves on the Pittsburgh Penguins hit list. The Penguins, riding a 13 game winning streak, easily took care of the Jets winning 4-0. Pascal Dupuis scored twice for the Pens and Thomas Vokoun stopped all 20 shots that he faced.

The Carolina Hurricanes rolled into the MTS Centre and stormed the Jets early with two first period goals. Winnipeg never recovered and fell to the Canes 3-1. The Hurricanes win put them four points back of the Jets with three games in hand. After the game, Claude Noel brought up the impact of the loss in the tight Southeast race.

“The division race will play itself out. We had an opportunity to extend the gap,” Noel told the media. “No one is more disappointed than us.”

The Winnipeg Jets will now try to protect their division lead in April as they embark on a three game road trip followed by six games at home.

{jathumbnail off}

The Winnipeg Jets gained a much needed two points Sunday night as they beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2. Bryan Little had a goal and two assists and Ondrej Pavelec was solid in net stopping 23 shots. The Jets seemed to be kicking a team while they were down as earlier in the day, the Lightning announced the firing of head coach Guy Boucher.

Bryan Little scored at the 14:02 mark of the first period to give the Jets the lead. Little provided the spark early in the game and would continue to find the score sheet in the second period assisting on the power play goal by Dustin Byfuglien. After Steve Stamkos scored his league leading 22nd goal of the season to draw the Lightning within one, Little would find a pinching Tobias Enstrom with a quick feed to put the Jets up 3-1. It was Enstrom’s first game in over a month after suffering a shoulder injury. Rookie Cory Conacher would score in the third period for the Lightning and netminder Cedrick Desjardins making only his 7th career start would stop 23 saves in the loss.

Ondrej Pavelec was brilliant at times bailing out the Jets on more than one occasion. Lightning forward Cory Conacher found himself all alone on Pavelec on a powerplay but the Jets goalie was up to the task making a dazzling glove save to preserve the lead.

After the game, coach Claude Noel talked highly of his goalie’s play even suggesting that he’s been one of the best players on the team all year.

“[Pavelec] has been arguably our best player pretty much for a long stretch of time. I’m just thankful that he’s in the net, let’s put it that way,” Noel said. “I thought he did his part and more and that’s what he has been doing”.

The Jets finished off the home stand going 2-2 and will now hit the road to take on the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday. The matchup pits the top two Southeast teams against each other with Winnipeg a four point cushion. Carolina has three games in hand.

Caps Ground Jets; Holtby Earns 4th Shut Out

{jathumbnail off}

The Winnipeg Jets have faced Braden Holtby twice this year. After 120 minutes, they still haven’t found an answer for the Washington Capitals goaltender. Holtby stopped all 20 shots he faced and Alexander Ovechkin led the way with a goal and two assists to beat the Jets 4-0.

The Winnipeg Jets found themselves playing on their heels as turnovers proved costly throughout the game. Troy Brouwer scored through traffic after he pounced on a Grant Clitsome turnover in the neutral zone giving the Capitals a 1-0 lead.

Late in the first period, Alexander Ovechkin took advantage of a bad pass in the Jets zone and quickly found Marcus Johannson across the slot for the easy tip in to beat Ondrej Pavelec. The Jets found themselves down 2-0 after one period.

After a scoreless second period, Ovechkin proceeded to take control of the game. With Olli Jokinen serving a Delay of Game penalty called on Ondrej Pavelec, the Capitals captain was left wide open burying a one timer for his 13th of the season. He would later assist on Nicklas Backstrom’s goal late in the third putting the finishing touches on the Jets.

With the Jets playing back to back games against the Capitals, Jets coach Claude Noel said that they would need to change their approach for the second game.

“You have to change something. You can’t go out and do the same things,” said Noel. “You’ve got to look at a lot of things. I don’t know what it will be but tomorrow will be a new day.”

Whatever the approach is for Friday night’s game, Mark Stuart might not be a part of it. The Jets defenseman was on the receiving end of an Alexander Ovechkin hit late in the second period and went straight to the dressing room. He returned in the third period but only played one shift.

Despite the loss, the Jets remained at the top of the Southeast Division standings as the Carolina Hurricanes fell to the New Jersey Devils 4-1.

If the Winnipeg Jets proved anything in Tuesday night’s win against the Boston Bruins, that it’s not how you start but how you finish. The Jets used a three goal outburst in the third period to win 3-1 and now find themselves atop the Southeast Division.

After a scoreless first period, Boston scored quickly in the second to take a 1-0 lead. Brad Marchand scored the opening goal off of a turnover by Zach Bogosian 8 seconds into the second frame. The Bruins dominated for most of the period and the Jets were lucky to escape just down a goal.

The Winnipeg Jets had never won a game where they trailed after 40 minutes but found themselves on the powerplay ten minutes into the third. The Jets capitalized as Blake Wheeler deflected a Zach Bogosian shot past Tuuka Rask to tie the game at one.

It didn’t take long for the Jets to take the lead as Evander Kane scored just 57 seconds later putting them in front for good. Blake Wheeler would add an empty netter for his second of the game. Ondrej Pavelec stopped 27 of the 28 shots he faced to help move the Jets past the Carolina Hurricanes who lost 4-1 to the Florida Panthers earlier in the night.

The Jets find themselves in action next hosting the Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals in back-to-back home games Thursday and Friday night.

Flying high in March madness playoff race

{jathumbnail off}

The Winnipeg Jets are flying high these days and have top spot in the Southeast Division - that's a playoff spot yo!

Their early March 4-game road trip didn’t start off well with a disappointing loss to the Panthers. The Jets earned six of a possible eight points with wins against the Lightning, the Florida Panthers re-match and a shoot-out loss to the New Jersey Devils.

In front of the Winnipeg faithful, the Jets dominated the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Rangers winning both games. Against the Leafs, Evander Kane scored a beauty of a breakaway goal with a blazing wrist shot top shelf against Leaf netminder, James Reimer. I have to also give credit to the creativity of the Jets fans screaming “Let’s Go Blue Jays” at the game as it paid homage to Leafs fans “cheering” when the Leafs are losing at home at the Air Canada Centre.

The Rangers are also lurking behind the Jets in the playoff race and make every game that much more important. The Jets are firing on all cylinders and getting contributions from all four lines. Claude Noel’s post game comment, “To me the difference is that we’re emotionally involved in the game, both the emotions and physicality. I think that’s driving our team.”

The Leafs rematch at Air Canada Centre was a seesaw battle where the Jets were up as much as 4-1 before the Leafs battled back to tie the game at 4 to force the game into overtime. Overtime decided nothing and it would take 10 rounds of shootout hockey before Zach Bogosian scored the shootout-winning goal. CBC must have been happy to see that, Leaf fans, not so much.

Let’s not dive too much into the loss against the Ottawa Senators. The Jets looks slow, sluggish and fatigued. Jets lost 1-4 badly. It was time to head back home, regroup and get some much needed rest.

The Bruins overpowered the Jets during the first two periods and Ondrej Pavelec stepped up big time to keep the Jets within one goal. In the third period and in less than a minute, two goals by Blake Wheeler and Evander Kane blew the roof off at MTS Centre giving the Jets a 2-1 lead and they wouldn't look back. An empty net goal by Blake Wheeler in the last minute of the game sealed the huge two point victory.

Huge win against the Bruins last night! And I mean HUGE! The Winnipeg Jets have 34 points and there four teams tied with 32 points - Hurricanes, Maple Leafs, Rangers and the Devils. The Winnipeg Jets play the Washington Capitals in a back-to-back tilt at the phonebooth on Thursday and Friday!

Go Jets Go!
